Desert Island Dubs Ep 2 Is Live: D&B Disco Inspo Episode With Jason Wann

Okay, it’s time for the readers and D&B fans to suspend disbelief for a second: Kmag, believe it or not, has always wanted to incorporate other genres. The new editorial team found out this little fact from one of the creators of the Mag, Colin Steven, whilst took over in 2023. Thus far there have been so many drum and bass submissions and artists to work with that said other genre coverage has been few and far between, but as the Mag grows, expect to see some wild cards.

This brings us to Jason Wann. Wann is a multi-project, multi-genre synth mad scientist with a healthy respect for all things electronic and a room full of vintage progammers. Whilst he doesn’t tag himself as experimental, the way he produces, engineers and uses samples certainly would imply a lot of experimentation. He’s got SINES, an intercontinental duo with Leeds-based singer Kitty Richardson, Blood Oyster, a saucy militant feminist project that uses all samples to create wild mashups, and his new project ROMAANCE, a virtual band with many secrets and beautiful output, and most importantly, he created the D&B jingle on the beginning of this Desert Island Dubs episode.

Listeners to this DID ep should think of Jason’s picks as an eductaion of the origins of electronic music in sound, as well as a library of technicque and samples to draw from. Every track on this list is some sort of deep cut that, even if one has heard of the artist, one may not have heard the particular track. Wann has an encyclopaedic knowledge of electronica, and producers looking for inspiration should run to ransack this episode.

A huge thank you to the chaotic but always inspiring Wann for this one. All of his work can be streamed and purchased on Bandcamp, and be sure to check out his YouTube, where he cobbles together crazy videos to match his eclectic style.
