One of the great tragedies of the modern D&B era was the loss in 2017 of legendary DJ and producer, Marcus Intalex. Considered one of the most influential artists and a champion of the genre, the drum and bass world is still smarting from his untimely death. Almost anyone, artists, promoters and fans alike will have a story or kind thought about Intalex when asked, and both his discography and personal legacy continue to resonate throughout the scene.
Shortly after his passing, the Marcus Intalex Music Foundation was established with the aim of providing ‘educational workshops & events to give the next generation of talent the tools and space to develop their craft’. Several artworks were commissioned as well, and a documentary about his life is underway as of 2021 as well. Now, writer and publisher Sherif Dhaimish and writer and DJ Mark O’Donnell (Mark OD) have put together a book on the legendary DJ’s life, called How You Make Me Feel: The Life and Legacy of Marcus Intalex.
Sort of a posthumous memoir written largely from the perspective of his friends and those in the music industry who knew him most, How You Make Me Feel chronicles Intalex’s life, music and influence through stories and interviews with the likes of Goldie, Calibre, Flight, Jenna G and more. The illustrated volume also has a massive collection of photos from all of Intalex’s years in D&B and techno (as Trevino).
How You Make Me Feel promises to be an emotional and personal read with loads of nostalgia for old school heads and education for newer ravers, not only about the life and times of the icon that is Marcus Intalex, but the fabric and evolution of D&B itself, of which Intalex was a major part. It will easily sell out and become a collector’s item.
For those who feel a special kinship with Marcus Intalex and his work, the publisher of the book, Kmag’s sister company Velocity Press will print the name of anyone who purchases before 14 July inside the actual book. It’s a true cherished keepsake and the scene can’t thank these authors and Velocity enough for creating it, though the real thanks to go Marcus Intalex for his decades of service to the music we all love Rest in power.
