The sluggish post-holiday January malaise may be setting in for many D&B punters, but this month also tends to be a time when artists start pumping out energetic drillers, and nothing is more energetic than a good neurofunk driller. In pursuit of this desire to help the drum and bass world stay awake through the longest part of the winter, German duo Neonlight have made ‘Purple Radiance’, a shiny new track in whose glow fans may all bask.
Due out this Friday, 16 January on Evolution Chamber, ‘Purple Radiance’ has the raw neuro power fans have come to expect from Neonlight, with blaring horns and a classic heavy beat structure, but it’s got a little something extra and unexpected: the vibe is downright chipper. What does this mean? In the case of a neurofunk track, it can be a bit confusing. Neuro is typefied by fast, swirling snares, loads of breaks and raw power but it’s generally written in minor keys, giving a dark and brooding undertone in terms of the synths and ‘melody’, if one can call it that in a neuro track.
‘Purple Radiance’ is differnt in that it’s got some definite major key vibes. While not actually written in a major key, there are big, dissonant chords punctuating the track which combine major and minor notes, making the track feel brighter and (brace yourselves, neuroheads) happier than one may be used to on this type of track. There’s plenty of brooding and glitching to be had in the main melody, however, and the effect when the minor and major notes clash in ‘Purple Radiance’ is, well, radiant.
Fans have been clamouring to hear ‘Purple Radience’ since the clips Evolution Chamber has dropped thus far are making people wonder what this spearkly new banger from Neonlight is all about, so Kmag is happy to bring the full track premiere a few days early.
‘Purple Radiance’ drops 16th January on Evolution Chamber. Pre-order of pre-save here.
