Nymfo: 5 Tunes That Changed My Life + Guest Mix

Dutch badboy Nymfo steps in for a history lesson on the wide range of musical influences that continue to inspire and shape his inimitable sound. Having just released Coming Through / Survivor for Dispatch Recordings, Nymfo was kind enough to thread all the pieces together in a wicked exclusive mix for Kmag readers.

CHOPIN – NOCTURNE IN E-FLAT MAJOR, OP. 9 NO. 2 (1830-1831)
It’s difficult to choose my favourite Chopin tune, because he is my hero of all time. I always listen to his music at the airport the day after a gig and the amazing chords, melodies and feeling in all his music – it’s just beautiful. I play classical piano as well, but playing a Chopin song perfectly is the most difficult thing on earth. Besides this playing piano is perfect to score girls, they always love it when a man can rinse the piano.

RICARDO VILLALOBOS – DEXTER – PLAYHOUSE (2003)
So dark, deep and even a bit sad. All about the vibes in this song for me. I love it when Ricardo is playing long sets and I heard him playing this tune once early in the morning while he was doing a 6 hour set. It was light outside, the venue was still packed and it was the perfect timing to hear ‘Dexter.’ The video or song don’t make you happy at all, but I always like sad music for some reason.

RANDALL & ANDY C – SOUND CONTROL – RAM (1994)
Sound Control was the first jungle / dnb track I heard and also bought. It was the 1st time I experienced the amen break to the max and this tune is still a big classic for me. So much diversity in one tune, love it! I bought this on cd and it was a compilation album and I still rinse this cd in the car so now and then. Years after that I found the vinyl as well, so I’m a proud vinyl owner of this classic as well!

VANGELIS – BLADE RUNNER (SOUNDTRACK) – FULL MOON (1982)
I have to watch Blade Runner a couple of times a year, because it’s one of my favourite movies. I’m proud to be Dutch because Rutger Hauer is in this movie. But also, Vangelis did an amazing job for the soundtrack. A soundtrack which gives me goosebumps each and every time and I  listen to it no matter what kind of mood I am in. Of course, there is a Blade Runner poster in my studio.

JUSTIN MARTIN – THE SAD PIANO – BUZZIN’ FLY (2003)
For me, this could almost have been produced by Calibre – it’s such a perfect house tune. I discovered this tune not long ago, because I heard of Justin Martin via Vine. He is the most funny guy on social media so I started listening to his music as well which is great. After hearing more of his tunes I started writing some ‘house’ as well. I’m still in an early phase, but he gave me a lot of inspiration.
